the birth of abigail marie :: northern virginia homebirth photographer

Birth is a transformative process that takes many twists and turns, a process that births not just babies but mothers. Often, the depictions of birth that we see in the media (TLC, I’m looking at you) are scary…gory…something that should remain hidden and not spoken of.

And then there are births like the birth of little Abigail Marie.

This was mama’s third baby and third homebirth. This strong mama knows how to wait on her baby’s perfect timing – all three of her babies have been *at least* 11 days past their “due date”. That quiet trust permeated the home as Abigail made her way into the world. This was birth as it can be – quiet and warm and welcoming, rather unlike those TV depictions. Baby slipped into a pool of warm water and up onto mama’s chest for her first moments earthside. Her first hours were filled with nursings and cuddles, a newborn exam on mama’s bed, and a nap on daddy’s chest. Sounds just about perfect to me – and I think little Abigail would agree.

Congratulations and good job, mom and dad. It was an honor and a pleasure to be with you as you welcomed Abigail. I hope you are having a wonderful babymoon!

A special thanks to the wonderful midwives from the NOVA Natural Birth Center – it is always a pleasure to serve with these wonderful women.

I just adore your work! My “baby-bearing” years are far behind me, my youngest is turning 31 next month. Whenever I come across your pics/videos of these amazingly strong & brave Moms-in-the-making, it takes me back to the first moments of my children’s lives. If I had it to do over, I would labor more like your moms. The births you attend appear to be so tranquil & peaceful. I can’t imagine what that must be like, compared to the frantic pace of the way it was 30-35 years ago. Bless you & these families for sharing their most private & beautiful life’s moments!
